Sims 4 Keeps Crashing - Unknown Issue

Hi everyone,

So back in January after the update dropped, I splurged and got the Laundry pack, Wedding Stories, Love struck and Get Famous DLC's. Ever since then, the game has stopped working. I can get loaded into my save, I'll play for 5-10 minutes and it'll stutter/freeze for a second then crash with no error report. I've tried "repairing" it through the EA app, reinstalling, starting new saves, switched between Direct X9 and 11, drivers are up to date, playing with and without mods, I tried uninstalling the newly acquired DLC's and nothing has worked. I've spent the last month or so try to fix it but am out of solutions. Seen some others on Reddit posting similar problems, but there were no answers or fixes. Hopefully I can get some help here!

Best,

  • JoySkit  the second crash is another one related to CPU Turbo Boost.  That's not the only possible cause, just the most common one.  It is absolutely not harmful to disable this setting, and you can reenable it whenever you want.  As for why Sims 4 is reacting badly to it now, that's not clear, but I started seeing the problem in the summer, not long after the game introduced DirectX 11 mode.

The first crash is a generic access violation without any useful details.  The third error is a crash of the graphics driver.  Since you've already updated the driver, the next step is a clean uninstall and reinstall, and in fact it's best to try this first since this particular error is so clear-cut, at least in terms of what exactly is happening.  (Why the driver crashes can vary, but it is in fact crashing.)  Here's how:

Updated my BIOS and still got a crash. From everything I'm reading, I shouldn't disable CPU turbo boost and knowing that the Sims 4 ran fine for a year on this PC with it on, I don't see why that would factor now. Below I'm listing two Sims 4 crash reports + this time I got a Windows hardware error.

  • JoySkit  The EA App crash may or may not be relevant.  Let me know if it happens again.

The Sims 4 crash looks like the result of a high-end Intel processor that the motherboard overclocks by default.  Sims 4 doesn't respond well to these settings.  Sometimes a BIOS update fixes the issue, so look for a newer BIOS for your board.

If you don't find one, or you'd rather not update right now, boot into BIOS and disable CPU Turbo Boost.  It should be somewhere under Advanced settings, although exactly where depends on the board.

  • JoySkit  Your dxdiag lists one crash of Sims 4 due to the Nvidia graphics driver, so please install the newest driver.  Go here:

    https://www.nvidia.com/en-us/drivers/

and download the Game Ready Driver.  Run the installer as an admin: right-click the download and select "Run as administrator."  Choose the Custom (not Express) install method, and check the box to perform a clean install.  Restart afterwards and before trying to play.

If that doesn't help, please uninstall Razer's Game Manager Service, which is crashing repeatedly.  You may be able to reinstall it, but please test with it removed.

If that doesn't help either, please look for new errors in the Reliability Monitor.  Hit Windows key-R and enter "perfmon /rel" without quotes, and you'll see a chart of errors and updates with a column for each day.  Today is on the right.

Look for an error that happened at exactly the time of your most recent Sims 4 crash.  If you find one, double-click it to see more details, then copy that info and paste it into a reply here.  If you don't see a new error, check back in an hour or so—the Reliability Monitor doesn't always update right away.

Just tried your suggestion above and it crashed after 2 minutes of running in the same way I mentioned above. I've attached the dxdiag file

  • JoySkit  Have you tried playing in completely clean user folder?  If not, please try it now:  Move the entire Sims 4 folder out of Documents > Electronic Arts and onto your desktop.  When you launch the game, a clean folder will spawn with no content.  (Your saves and other content will be intact in the folder you've moved but temporarily unread by the game.)  Don't add anything to the new folder yet; just start a new save and see how it runs.

If that doesn't help, please provide a dxdiag.  Click Windows key-R, enter dxdiag in the run box, wait for the scan to finish, click "Save all information," and save the file to your desktop.  From there, you can attach it to a reply using the paper clip (Attachment) icon included with the other formatting buttons.

I can't help with Madden issues directly, but if I see anything obviously related in your dxdiag, or an issue that could affect both games, I'll be sure to mention it.

I should mention that Madden 23 keeps crashing in a similar fashion as well, so maybe it has something to do with the EA app?
