[CURRENT ISSUE] Sims 4 crashing since November 2020 update, NOT CC/Mod related
I updated my game today with the new November 2020 update. It let me play for a little while (10-20) minutes before crashing. Nothing popped up on my screen and no error code either. The game just closed itself basically. I play on Mac. Edit - edited title to reflect issue since the 10 November patch, 1.68. Issue: Since the 18 June 2019 patch, 1.52.100.1220, Sims 4 players are reporting that certain Trackpad controls are not working properly in game, specifically the pinch zoom gesture and the two finger rotate. One or other of the controls will work depending on which one you first use after launching your game. Players affected: All Mac users patched to 1.52.100.1220. Workaround: Thankfully this isn't a game breaker and is easy to work around. Use the following alternative controls to zoom and pinch: Zoom option 1 - two finger swipe, as if you are scrolling up and down a page Zoom option 2 - use the + and - keys Rotate - use the < and > keys or mapped equivalent on your keyboard If you feel using the < and > keys is not helpful when building simply make sure you use these in game before using pinch to zoom. This will render the pinch to zoom function useless but still allow you to use two finger rotate. For more explanation of Trackpad controls go into System Preferences > Trackpad and watch the little animated explanations. Apple also have a support page here - https://support.apple.com/en-gb/HT204895 Bug reports will be merged in this thread. Hi! I just downloaded Sims 4 and ever since I first opened it the screen started flinching from the top. I'm not too good with technical stuff so I would need some help with this. I tried to fix the problem with Origin, but it couldn't find the issue. I read somewhere that the problem could be about too high graphics? How do I get them lower on the game then? I didn't do anything to cause the clitch, it came on it's own when I tried to run the game. I also tried closing it and opening again, and I feel like the flinching gets worse and worse when continuing playing the game. ISSUE Saves One minute your game is working fine. The next you go to play and the Load Game button has disappeared, there seems to be no way to play an existing save. CC/Mods Newly added CC/Mods do not show up in your game despite being properly installed (for help with installing 3rd party content see here) or CC randomly starts disappearing from your game. Library items Saving Lots, Rooms and Households to your in-game Library doesn't work CAUSE Most likely the internal storage on your Mac is too full and iCloud is pushing any newly added files to your Documents folder in the cloud. This can happen at anytime. You can check the storage level by clicking on the Apple in the top left corner of the menu bar then About This Mac, then the Storage tab. By default, the game stores your Saves, Mods, Tray (where your Library items are saved) and all your user game data in a folder called The Sims 4 in Documents > Electronic Arts. If there is no Sims 4 folder in this location the game will recreate a new one each time it is launched. If you have iCloud Drive enabled and set to store your Desktop & Documents folder in the cloud it may be moving your existing Sims 4 folder to the cloud, hence the need to create a new Sims 4 folder every time you launch the game. You can check the status of various files and folders, and what the little cloud icons mean, here. FIX Firstly, you MUST free up some space on your Mac otherwise doing this is pointless. Empty the Downloads folder, go through your data and see what you no longer need, empty the Bin. If you have large Photos, Music and TV libraries consider storing them on an external drive. Instructions here on how to do this for your Photos library, the principle is the same for the Music and TV apps. Open System Preferences and then your iCloud settings. What you click on can vary by macOS, check Apple's help page here if you can't immediately find where to look. This is where you can choose what gets stored in the cloud. We are only interested in two settings, iCloud Drive and Optimise Mac Storage Click on Options... in the iCloud Drive setting and make sure Desktop & Documents Folders is unchecked. Scroll down to the bottom of this Apple help page to understand what happens to your data when you turn off the setting. Back at the iCloud settings window, Uncheck Optimise Mac Storage below the list of apps using iCloud. This means that your Mac will stop pushing files to the cloud when the internal storage is getting full. For more info on this setting read this help page. Once you have successfully stopped iCloud from moving the contents of your Documents folder to the cloud you need to move the Sims 4 folder back into the default location - Macintosh HD > Users > [User] > Documents > Electronic Arts Apple explain here what the status of the little cloud icons mean. If you're feeling brave you could consider creating a symlink and storing your Sims 4 folder on an external drive. Or maybe change your EA App Games Library location to an external Drive.39KViews17likes630CommentsInformation for Mac users running macOS Lion (10.7)
Dear Simmers, We hope you’re all doing well. If you are a Mac user, please read the below! If you currently play The SimsTM 4 and run macOS Lion (10.7) there will be important changes you need to know about. Starting next month, we will be unable to support macOS Lion (10.7). On October 3, 2019 we will release a patch update that will no longer support The Sims 4 on that operating system. If you wish to continue playing the game while running macOS Lion (10.7), do not update The Sims 4 with the October 3 patch, or any future game patches. To prevent the update, you will need to disable automatic updates on Origin. This will allow you to continue playing the game, however, you will not receive any future updates for the base game or be able to play any additional packs released after October 3. macOS Lion (10.7) Q&A How do I disable automatic updates on Origin? To disable Auto-Update in the Origin 9 client: Go to the "Origin" drop-down menu and select "Preferences" In the "General" section, under "Updates," un-check the “Automatically keep my games up to date" option This will prevent automatic updates from being applied to any Origin games you own. You will still be notified when updates are available, but you will need to manually choose to download updates. Make sure not to manually download The Sims 4 updates. Will I have access to the Gallery if I don’t get any additional updates? Yes, you will continue to have access to the Gallery where you can both upload and download content. WIll my progress be saved if I don’t get updates? Yes, your existing game-saves will be preserved. Will I be able to continue playing with all the packs I own? Yes, all packs that you have purchased and installed will still be installed. Any packs you have purchased and have not yet installed will still be available for download from the Origin client. Which packs will I be able to play? You will be able to play all released packs up to and including Realm of Magic. I use macOS Lion (10.7) and accidentally installed the October patch for The Sims 4. Is there anything I can do?EA_David6 years agoCommunity Admin33KViews17likes76Comments[FIXED] Sims 4 crashing when travelling - ARM Macs only
Hi, My game has been repeatedly crashing since the update this past week. I'm using a macbook air M3 2024 and am up to date, running Sequoia 15.2. I use the EA app and have lots of packs. It lets me load the game up and play for a while, then crashes at random times, most often when I am trying to travel. It doesn't glitch or freeze at all before crashing, it just exits the game out of nowhere. I play with basic mods but I have removed them and it still crashes (they are also all up to date). I don't think I use UI cheats, but am not 100% sure. I have repaired the game in the EA App and uninstalled/reinstalled the EA App. I also deleted the localthumbcache and onlinethumbnailcache. Please let me know what other steps to take, I just want to be able to play without saving every minute!! I'm not great with computers, so layman's terms would be great. I play sims 4 on Mac. The game runes great and I have been playing it fine. However, after installing the latest update (June 3rd), the game unexpectedly quits when I try to launch my save file. I moved my sims 4 file to the desktop, started a new game and that worked fine. However, when I moved my save file back into this game (I did not move any mods in and disabled CC in game) I had the same problem! Any help would be really appreciated!! I have repaired the game and deleted my mods.Solved15KViews13likes13Comments[Guide] Running Windows on your Mac
RUNNING WINDOWS ON YOUR MAC This post provides some basic information on running the Windows operating system on your Mac for simming purposes. There are links to other sources of information and help. This thread is locked because it is for reference only, to help you decide the best approach - if you get stuck installing Windows or you want to know more, go to Apple’s Support website or go to the Mac section of the sims3.com, where there are more Mac simmers available to assist, including some who are currently using the methods described to run Windows on their Mac. Before you get started It would be advisable to read all of the relevant help materials before getting started so that you feel confident that you know what you are doing. Be sure to make a backup of your Mac (using TimeMachine or some other method) so that if you go wrong you can easily get back to your current position. To learn how to use TimeMachine go here: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1427 TimeMachine will make a backup of your entire system to an external drive. It is a good idea to do this from time to time anyway, but definitely before making any radical changes such as partitioning the hard drive! Why would I want to run Windows on my Mac? 1. If you want to play The Sims 2 Ultimate Collection, which is available only for PC download through Origin. Aspyr made a truly excellent port of most of The Sims 2 series for the native Mac operating system. However they didn’t port the final few expansion packs and EA are now withdrawing support for all but the Ultimate Collection, which is PC only. So, if you would like to carry on playing The Sims 2, you may wish to do so via Windows so that you can take advantage of the Ultimate Collection, both for its completeness and for ongoing support. 2. If you want to play The Sims 3 on Windows because you have had a lot of problems getting it to run on your Mac OS X. Unlike The Sims 2, which was produced separately for PC and Mac, The Sims 3 was produced as a single game that is supposed to run on both operating systems. A programme called Cider was used to make the game run on Mac OS X, but it wasn’t a proper port of the game. For this reason, Mac simmers have tended to have more problems with the game than PC simmers, including more crashing, less stability and, most seriously, memory problems even on Macs with a huge amount of RAM. There are ways to help the game run well on a Mac, so if, like me, you would much prefer to use the native OS X, just post in the TS3 section of Answer HQ and I will try to help you. However if you continue to struggle or you would just prefer to be playing in Windows (which usually causes fewer RAM issues and allows you to play with higher graphical settings), then installing Windows on your Mac may be something you wish to try. 3. If you wish to use the CAW tool (Create A World) for The Sims 3. The CAW tool was only ever made available for PC simmers, so if you would like to make your own worlds for The Sims 3, installing Windows is necessary. 4. To play The Sims 4 when it is released in September 2014. At the time of writing, there is no information at all on if or when a Mac version of The Sims 4 will be made. We know that it will not be included with the game released in September 2014, which is PC-specific. It is possible that EA will make Mac version at a later date, as they did for the most recent incarnation of SimCity, but this has not been confirmed. So, if you like the look of The Sims 4 and want to play it right away, Windows is the only way. This also goes for the TS4 CAS demo released in July/August 2014. What are the different options for installing Windows and which should I choose? The good news is that Windows tends to run brilliantly on Mac hardware. You will have the simming advantages of a PC simmer but still be able to enjoy using your Mac OS X for everything else. Plus if you have a Mac you probably have a really nice screen so your sims and worlds can look gorgeous! There are two main options: Bootcamp and Parallels. There are a few other ways to run Windows, including Oracle VirtualBox and VMware Fusion, but Bootcamp and Parallels are the most common options used. Bootcamp: this is software that ships with your Mac so, even if you are not currently using it, you will find that it is already on your computer ready for you to use. It is used to create a partition on your hard drive, into which you install Windows. When you start your computer you choose whether to boot up the native OS X or go into the Windows partition. The advantages of using Bootcamp are that it is straightforward to use, it is Mac software so you can rely on updates coming through Apple, when you are using it you are solely running Windows so your Mac doesn’t need to do too much at once, which can make it a more stable experience. The main disadvantage is that you do need to reboot in order to switch between the partitions. I personally used Bootcamp to play The Sims 3 for several months and did not find this particularly onerous. Parallels: this is software that you can purchase for your Mac to enable you to run both Windows and Mac OS X simultaneously. Instead of booting up the Windows operating system, you start your Mac as usual and then open Windows - a bit like running the whole Windows OS inside a programme window. The advantages of using Parallels are that you can switch instantly between the operating systems because they are running at the same time. There is no need to reboot your computer to access your Sims in Windows. The disadvantage of using Parallels is that you are placing more demands on your Mac - you are essentially running two operating systems at the same time, as well as the VM system and the game. However if you have a Mac with high specs, this may not be an issue at all. You may also need to be more vigilant in looking out for driver updates and so on, as they will not be delivered via your Apple Updates. What do I need? Whether you decide to use Bootcamp or Parallels, you are going to need to purchase a copy of Windows. If you decide to choose Parallels then you will also need a copy of that software. Bootcamp is therefore the cheaper option as you already have that software. When using Bootcamp you will at some point need to save support software onto a USB stick (Fat 32 formatted) or a blank CD (if your Mac does not have a CD drive then you will have to use a USB stick). You are also going to need to have sufficient physical space on your hard drive to make room to install Windows. Having an excess of RAM is also going to help as your Mac will need enough RAM to run the game as well as enough to run the operating system - 8 GB is recommended, particularly if you are choosing the Parallels option as it will demand more of your Mac. Bootcamp instructions and sources of help If you want to try using Bootcamp, I would strongly advise you to now read the following resources. Firstly, check this thread over at the Mac forums of the TS3 site: http://forum.thesims3.com/jforum/posts/list/579888.page It was written by BluebellFlora and is a guide with screenshots in the first post that you can follow to understand how you will use Bootcamp. The guide covers many of the questions that you probably have, such as how much space to give to the Windows partition etc. If you have problems or need further information, that is where you should post. Secondly, read the official Apple Support website for using Bootcamp: https://www.apple.com/uk/support/bootcamp/ There is information there for the different versions of the Mac operating system as well as information on Windows 7 versus Windows 8. You can therefore put together a guide for yourself based on your Mac OS X and the version of Windows that you have chosen. Parallels instructions and sources of help If you think you would prefer Parallels, search for the software on the Apple Store website and read the product information. This will give you an understanding of how the software works. The software will come with instructions on how to install it and you can also find additional guides by searching online. If you have more questions about the technical aspects of playing a Sims game within Windows using Parallels, go to the Mac forum of the TS3 site and post there. There is at least one Mac simmer using Parallels who posts regularly at the site who may be able to help you. I wish you happy simming!
